Darin D. Sprake

Darin Sprake
Darin Sprake is a knowledgeable and seasoned criminal defense lawyer. Since being called to the bar in 2004, Darin has successfully represented clients in trial courts across Western Canada, including the Provincial Courts and Courts of Queen’s Bench in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, as well as the Provincial and Supreme Courts of British Columbia.

In the fall of 2012, Darin joined Sprake Song & Konye to focus on achieving extraordinary results for individuals in need of representation across Western Canada.  The firm currently has offices in Vancouver and Edmonton.

Darin obtained his law degree from the University of Alberta in 2003 after dividing his undergraduate studies between the University of Alberta and Yonsei University in Seoul South Korea, concentrating on international relations and international law.

During the course of his law school studies, Darin was heavily involved in the U of A’s  Student Legal Services as a caseworker, and became the project coordinator for the SLS criminal law program where he mentored numerous students in criminal defense work. Thereafter, he sat as a member of the Board and was Chair of the Board of Directors for a number of years.

Darin articled to Brian Beresh, QC, and after completing his articles, joined Alexander Pringle, QC at Pringle and Associates.  There, Darin developed broad experience in defending clients charged with serious criminal offences, including murder, trafficking in controlled substances, aggravated assault, and sexual assault.  He also defends clients charged with impaired driving and regulatory offences, such as those found in the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act.

Given his international education, Darin has also effectively represented clients facing immigration and extradition proceedings, all of which involve sensitive and careful negotiations with Canadian Federal Prosecutors, as well as District Attorneys and Federal Prosecutors in the United States.

Early in his practice, Darin seized the opportunity to sharpen his skills and gain a greater knowledge of the criminal law as an ad hoc Crown Prosecutor with Alberta justice.  He has been hired by Alberta justice to conduct prosecutions when local Crown prosecutors are unable to or are conflicted with prosecuting certain matters.  In this role, Darin has acquired unique knowledge and insight into the approach of a Crown Prosecutor.

Darin prides himself on efficacy and ethics while representing his clients. Success can often depend on the lawyer’s reputation with the Crown and the Court.  Recently, Mr. Sprake received a letter of commendation from a Justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, wherein the Justice wrote, “Courts depend on the high professional standards of their officers. Your efforts… demonstrate that this Court is very well served in that regard.”

Darin Sprake would be pleased to put his skill, knowledge and reputation to work for any individual facing criminal, regulatory or disciplinary prosecutions.
